Visited a warehouse that is 1.2 million square feet of covered floor space. Thats 27.5 ACRES of air conditioned warehouse. It has DRIVE in freezers and fridges that are bigger than my house.

Kinja'd!!!

for scale - 27 acres

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

This entire room is -10F, shown is one row of 10.

Whats really interesting is more than half the volume of food and supplies is volunteer picked/made and packed. They have their own farms, dairies, canneries, soap factories, etc etc.

Even more amazing is 100% of the product in the warehouse is charity and will be given away.

Crazy.

The largest site I’ve inspected was 160 acres total with 900,000 feet of factory space. Took two days because they rushed me through everything . I drive past buildings the size of the one you mentioned and have nightmares.

This one is split into 2 buildings so that must help a little. but yeah, its a lot of ground to cover.

Yeah, big warehouses are crazy.

A mindboggling place I went recently was a textile (clothing) recycling facility.

All those donation bins and stuff for charities ? Typically those bins are owned by one or two large companies who pay a fee to the charities to keep their logos on the bins. The clothes are then collected and shredded to make things like cloths/towels/whatever.

These obviously are not pictures from where I went, but very similar. Makes you think how wasteful and shitty humans are.

Also, the sound of loose change hitting the concrete floor was a near constant thing.  Who donates pants with money in them?

My takeaway is that there are a lot of people on this planet.  This whole warehouse can get emptied for one large natural disaster and not come close to meeting the need.

This is a former Toys R US warehouse in NJ. 1.43m sq feet on 230 Acres. I worked on some of the fire and CCTV systems back in the day. It was before IP cameras really took off and remember wiring it with RG-11 which is coax similar to RG-6 but about 10mm thick.

Pros: many hungry people will be fed

Cons: These volunteers  may have religious beliefs which interfere with my euphoria from being enlightened by my own intelligence.

What’s the part that makes people shitty in this scenario?

That sounds...awful . Coax is terrible to work with in its own right because of how inflexible it is.

Wow....I always try to donate locally, preferably to a place to gives the items to its residents or beneficiaries directly (instead of just re-selling it). That means a little more legwork to find the right place, but typically it will go to better use.

Better to donate to thrift stores, shelters and hospices I think.  Take it direct to where you want it to go.

I’ve never even thought about it before but d o they keep forklifts in the refrigerated area? I guess I just always assumed that even the ones used outdoors in winter were always brought back inside and ultimately spent most of their time indoors at (more or less) room temperature.

Yes I guess that part was bad,  but it was a union job and we had to be on site at 7:30 but the electricians wouldn’t turn on the electricity until 8 or 8:30.  Then our break would come up that we had to take, and then their break I feel like no one could work or it would look weird so we ended up with a lot of down time.

I am curious how much energy it takes to keep a space that large at that cold of a temperature. Its gotta be astronomical in the summer. I am thinking about how my electric bill in a 600sf apartment went up by 4-5x in the summer just keeping me at a nice 73 degrees. Thats the most mind boggling part of this place to me!

The facility I work in has a workroom floor of 500,00sq/ft, but the whole building is 800,000. We also sort anywhere from 1.5-2 million pieces of mail every day of the week. We are a 24/7 facility, whether we are running the equipment or have them down for maintenance during the morning. We also sort thousands of magazines and packages every night. Our mechanics have tricycles with baskets to carry their tools and spare parts, and supervisors and managers have access to golf carts to drive around.
